Reason for the award

In recent years, optical discs have come to be used more widely as archival storage media for digital information, such as e-document storage. This international standard is a standard test method for experimentally estimating the reliability of optical discs, particularly the expected lifespan for archival storage. It uses digital signal error values as the failure criteria for optical discs, and specifies analytical procedures using statistical analysis techniques that apply the Eyring model to accelerated testing. In order to promote the use of this standard, amendments have been made to expand the scope of application to BD media as well.
Mr. Irie has participated in the deliberations from the drafting stage while coordinating opinions with domestic and international industry groups, and has written the overall standard as a Project Co-Editor in the international standard deliberations, playing a central role in the establishment of this standard. In recognition of these outstanding contributions, the International Standards Development Award will be presented to him.
